C'mon, what do you think a tower is supposed to symbolize?

Now THAT is an Axis Mundi anyone can get behind. Or in front of. Or beneath. Or if you're feeling particularly creative. . .

Little does the budding artist know, he is carrying on a noble, centuries-old British tradition. Though that phallus is a mere 36 feet.

Comicality aside, the phallus as an Axis Mundi is not a particularly new idea. See: the title of this post.

  1. If we're going to talk about phalluses (Phalli? Help me out here, Pseudo-Hermes) then we need to talk about Maypoles. Specifically, Maypoles how they do in Sweden.

  2. Funny you mention that, Maypole dances were held for centuries around the giant in the second link.

  3. @Katherine: Either is correct.

Why don't we have May Day in the United States? I believe it has something to do with the communist overtones of the holiday in Europe. But it seems to be a fairly big holiday in the homeland.

@Exegesis: You are good at pre-empting me! I was going to--and still will--post a very phallic Axis Mundi for next Monday's (sadly intermittent) feature. I tend to be much less likely to an/de-nounce something as phallic than most people. But there are exceptions.

As for the kid, let's hope cleaning up the roof, which is sure to be a monumental task, shall be something of a bildungsroman for him. Not a terribly fun one, though.
